The Allied command has bani existing national flags. After some discussion, the flag of black-red-gold was adopted as a new flag for the German Federal Republic of Germany (Rep. Fed. Of Germany) May 9, 1949. The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) used the same flag according to this Rocket German Review, but on October 1, 1959 it introduced a communist emblem in the center of the flag: a hammer (symbolizing the workers) and a pair of ears Interior compass (symbolizing the intellectuals) of grain (symbolizing the farmers). This remained until the territory of the former GDR was reunited with the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990.
