One of the biggest members of our family was a giant St. Bernard named Napoleon. We called him “Poley” for short.  Poley was the sweetest dog a person could ever have. He was so good natured. We lived out in the country, on a farm, and so we had many dogs, cats and kittens. Poley loved them all. In the winter, you could find him in the hay barn where his make-shift dog beds was in the hay.   The kittens and cats would all nestle up to his big warm body.  We had Poley for many years. When I was in 4th grade, I rode Poley in the 4-H Pet Show. We even made front page news! One summer, however, we went on vacation. We left Poley at home. When we returned home a week and a half later, Poley was gone. A few days later, we got a phone call from the Game Warden and he told us that someone called in to report a dead bear on the interstate. That dead bear turned out to be our Poley. It was such a sad time for our family, but we’ll have special memories like these to remember.
