It can be difficult to get steady work in software testing, which is why many software testers or aspiring developers are taking freelance work to build up experience and, of course, pay the bills.  By finding short or even long term software testing projects, software testers keep themselves busy while learning new things in a flexible working environment.  Best of all, most types of freelance software testing projects do not require a person to physically be present, which gives even more flexibility to the software tester.  This is a great way for people to get the experience that they will need to succeed.
