Yes, in the odd place (there are some quirky backwaters in the lakes) you will still find a b&b landlady who rules the roost with an iron fist. In general though, most lake district bed and breakfast accommodation has moved with the times and will offer you a warm welcome.
First impressions count, so my advice is to strike up a conversation, either by email, or preferably by phone, prior to booking. If you like the attitude of your prospective host, then make your reservation.
