Life in France for foreigners is eased if they can speak the language. Many British adults find French hard to learn and are held back by fear and a belief that British people are “bad at languages”. Interestingly many French people feel the same about themselves, but place more emphasis on the poor methods used in schools rather than innate inability. So, families are relieved when their children quickly pick up the French language and quickly become fluent in both. They can then feel that they’ve achieved a Life in France which really works.Chatting, reading and writing in French are learned naturally at school. Later on, parents may find their children don’t read or write English very well. The answer is to read English books to children from an early age. The progression to reading for themselves will come easily if books continue to be shared in the family.
